Fix sign-in problems

What each sign-in message means and how to get back into Debut.

This guide covers the messages you can see when you sign in to Debut. Each section quotes the message as it appears, says what it means, and says what to do.

"That address, password or code was not correct."

Debut shows this one message for a wrong address, a wrong password and a wrong code. It never says which one was wrong. That keeps people who guess from learning anything about your account.

  1. Check the email address shown on the screen. If it is the wrong one, choose Use a different email.

  2. Type your password again.

  3. On the code screen, enter the code your authenticator app shows right now.

  4. If you no longer know your password, choose I forgot my password.

"That code has been used already."

Each code works once. This often happens just after you set up your authenticator, because the code you used to set it up is still on screen.

Your app shows a new code every 30 seconds. Wait for the next one and enter that.

"This account is locked for a few minutes"

Too many failed attempts were made. Wrong codes count as failed attempts too. Nothing is wrong with your password.

The page that says the account is locked for a few minutes

The lock lifts about fifteen minutes after the last attempt. Every further try restarts that clock.

  1. Stop trying for now.

  2. Wait fifteen minutes.

  3. Choose Start again and sign in.

"Too many codes were tried"

Too many wrong codes were entered. Sign-in is paused for about fifteen minutes from the last attempt, and every further try restarts that clock.

You can also see this on a set-up or reset link. Wait, then open your link again. If it has expired by then, ask for a new one.

"This link is no longer valid"

The link has been used already, it has expired, or the workspace it was for is gone. Each link works for a set time.

The page that says this link is no longer valid

  • A password reset link works for 15 minutes. Choose Send me a new link to get another.

  • An invitation to join a workspace works for three days. Ask an owner or admin to send it again.

  • An authenticator reset link works for three days. Ask an owner or admin of your workspace to reset it again.

"Set up your authenticator from your email"

You see this after a correct password when your authenticator was reset. An owner or admin of your workspace, or BaselineZero support, did the reset. Your old codes no longer work.

  1. Find the email with the subject Set up your authenticator again. It comes from BaselineZero.

  2. Choose Set up your authenticator in the email.

  3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If you cannot scan it, choose Can’t scan the code? and type the key instead.

  4. Enter the six-digit code the app shows.

  5. Sign in with your password and the next code from the app.

Your password stays the same. If the link has expired, ask an owner or admin of your workspace to reset it again.

You lost your phone or your authenticator app

An owner or admin of your workspace can reset your authenticator. You do not need to contact BaselineZero.

  1. Ask an owner or admin to open Settings, then Team, then your name.

  2. They choose Reset authenticator… and then Reset authenticator.

  3. Every session you have ends, and you get an email with a link to set up a new authenticator.

  4. Follow the steps in the section above.

  • The owner can reset anyone except themselves.

  • An admin can reset engineers and read-only members.

  • Only the owner resets an admin's authenticator.

  • The owner's own authenticator is reset by BaselineZero support.

You forgot your password

  1. On the password screen, choose I forgot my password.

  2. Enter your work email address.

  3. Open the email with the subject Reset your BaselineZero password. The link works for 15 minutes.

  4. Choose a new password. You need your authenticator to finish.

The page says Check your email whether or not the address has an account. If nothing arrives, check the address you typed and your junk folder.

Microsoft sign-in messages

If your workspace signs in with Microsoft, a failed Microsoft sign-in shows a page headed Microsoft did not sign you in. The line under the heading says why.

  • "Microsoft reported a problem with the sign-in. You can start again." Choose Start again.

  • "This sign-in did not come back the way it left. Start again." Choose Start again.

  • "The sign-in could not be verified. Start again." Choose Start again.

  • "That Microsoft account is not on this team. Ask an owner to add you, then sign in again."

  • "Your team has no room for another member on its current plan. Ask an owner to make room, then sign in again."

  • "Your workspace’s plan doesn’t add members through Microsoft sign-in. Ask an owner to invite you."

  • "This organization’s Microsoft sign-in is not set up any more. Start again." If it happens again, ask an owner to check Settings, then Sign-in.

On the password screen you may see "Your organization signs in with Microsoft. A password works here for owners only." Choose Sign in with Microsoft instead.

Owners setting up Microsoft sign-in

These notices appear in Settings, then Sign-in.

  • "Microsoft did not complete the sign-in. Check the redirect URI is registered on your app exactly as shown, then try again." Copy the Redirect URI from the card into your app registration.

  • "Nothing was changed. Check the ids and the expiry date, that a first save includes the secret, and that only an owner is doing this."

  • "Not switched on. Your own address is not on a verified domain, so requiring Microsoft would lock you out."

  • If Debut asks you to sign in with a member account of your own Microsoft tenant, use an account on your firm's own domain. A guest or personal account does not work.

Signed out after a while

An hour without activity signs you out. A session also ends 12 hours after you sign in. Debut then takes you to the sign-in page, and you come back to the page you were on.

After you set up a new authenticator, wait for a fresh code before you sign in. The code you just used will not work twice.
